Shooting solo acoustic guitar videos seems like a natural job for the Zoom Q3HD, but when the camera frames the player and the instrument the mics are several feet away, leading to a wimpy sound dominated by the room. This clip demonstrates the use of a low cost aftermarket stick-on wide angle lens that allows the Q3HD to be placed closer to the subject, resulting in better audio.

You can read detailed information about the lens and its use at http://www.homebrewedmusic.com/2011/10/24/zoom-q3hd-with-a-stick-on-wide-angl...

The video was recorded on the Zoom Q3HD, stills captured with a Panasonic Lumix TS2, and the results were edited in REAPER 4.1.

The guitar is a Kathy Wingert Model E tuned to taropatch tuning (open G, D G D G B D low to high). The song in the demonstration is "My Yellow Ginger Lei," a classic of the slack key repertoire.

  • Another great video! Very helpful indeed! I really enjoy your videos and I find myself coming back to listen to them purely for your guitar playing! It's really smooth, clean, and beautiful! Is there anywhere I can watch or listen to just you playing guitar? I would really enjoy that!

    Cheers

  • @pbgangsta Thanks so much for your kind comment. I have a channel of slack key guitar instrumentals, franguidry - and a channel with a few videos of my string band, kawilinakaleponi - I hope you'll visit.

  • @udptran Oooops, my fingers fumbled in that last post. The editing was done in REAPER 4 using the ffmpeg library feature they added recently.

  • @udptran I shoot 720p/30fps, PCM audio 44.1/16 bit. The editing was done in Edius. The quality of the audio is due to camera/mic position. The stick-on lens lets me move the camera closer, which gives better sound.

    I have enjoyed your video.
