The trick is to make up a tinder bundle in two stages, much like a real bird's nest. The first stage would be a ball of fine fibrous material (fine grass, inner bark fibres, etc). Roll it into a tight ball between your hands and make a slight indentation in the top, to form a sort of broad, shallow cup.
Being fine it will take an ember quickly, and being dense it will smoulder predictably. This ball forms the heart of your bundle. The rest of the material will have more time to ignite.

A lefty.
Good bowing technique. One thing I can suggest has to do with the tinder bundle. If the material of your bundle is a bit course, a lot of the fine charred dust will tend to slip/be bown out between the tinder. You worked hard to produce all that char. May as well get the full benefit of it. In a real survival situation, your tinder is likely to be less ideal and probably damp. The bigger your ember, the better, as some of the heat will first be used to dry out the tinder.

real trick, do it while it is raining or in the snow. tricky, if you can do it then you are good.

@discothief The inside of a big piece of wood will be dry. The best tip though is to carry what you need with you. Once you have a fire going it gives you a chance to dry out more wood by burying it in hot ashes (not too long). Use sand or charcoal in the nook to increase friction, charcoal is great because it "wants" to catch already. Once you have a stick and a board which has done it it will be easier next time because of the free radicals. Our ancestors managed it, after all.

nice vid., very well done, I will try it too in the vacation :).
Fantastic mate! I tried this for two days and failed, probably due to using the wrong wood and too small a bow and spindle. Good info. It's amazing to think that people many thousands of years ago were doing it just like you did.

That's very impressive. I don't want to throw water all over your cool video but can you tell us how we do that if it is the normal wet British weather please?

Wait till the sun comes out.......its rather difficult with wet materials......but you already know that:)
Qr perhaps stick to matches ?

Brilliant mate, can I say though its not realistic to dry the wood out in a survival situation but to find standing dead wood, very easy with sycamore, maple. I live on the west coast of scotland where its mostly raining and cold and sycamore is common, I will make a video this winter outdoors explaining every step, anyway well done
