Why do servers ignore the Fair Labor Standards Act? Why do they ignore the fact that their employers are the "cheap" ones refusing to pay a livable wage? Why do they promote dishonesty to the IRS by not claiming all their tips on their taxes? Why do they ignore the fact that they signed a work contract acknowledging the very specific terms of their jobs, which includes at the very least wages and duties?

I'm from Australia and I've been to America a couple times on holiday. The tipping practice really surprised me, tipping here is not expected in any circumstances however some people do it here at restaurants from time to time if the service was exceptional. Although I sympathise with your position I think tipping is stupid. America should get rid of the tipping practice and raise minimum wage to a half-reasonable level, it's just greed by the employers ripping off their employees and customers.

when i was in ny ,at my hotel tip was included on the bill in bar and restaurant, yet the waitress was fishing for me to tip again, i found this realy annoying

Waiters make different wages in different states. In Arizona its 2.14 an hour. In Oregon its 8.25 an hour. It varies by state but for the most part it is lower than minimum wage.

@kahraman Tourists are also legally obligated to abide by customs and laws in other nations (Just look at women visiting in Islamic nations forced to wear head dresses who arent Muslims themselves), thus, tourists should be accustomed to and practice the social and cultural customs and practices in America. Tip and be thanked or dont and get worse service and hate us for it. Doesnt matter, youre a tourist we will never see you again.

@edwardd6681 What exactly is Gratunity? Do you mean Gratuity?

@ilikevines I have a friend from Australia, when shes in America, she does the standard 18-20% tip. She just follows customs, which is what I would normally do as well in another country. At the same time, in America, we want things to be cheap for us, so if servers were paid a living wage, unfortunately everyone else would pay $25 for a burger and not $8.00. We want cheap things we can afford, not the reality of what the item really costs. Servers are paying for your food/experience here. Sadly

@NjmchOne For me, Bar staff is $1.00-$1.50 per drink ordered/made. Cabs about $1.50 per every $5.00 of the bill ($3 per every $10 driven), Servers 18-20% standard ($1 tip total if they never refill my water, even if service EXCEEDS in all other areas)

@invalidacess In MANY states the minimum wage for servers is about $2-$3 per hour. In many states however, especially in the western part of the nation, we have minimum wage that is applicable regardless of your job.,California is varying based on state or city minimum wage, but ALWAYS AT OR ABOVE State Minimum Wage.

10% of $55 is $5.50, not $5.55

@invalidacess Really?? A lie? what information source are you basing this statement on? The Truth is the waiter will make minimum wage IF the patrons tip correctly. This is why the hourly wage is only $2.65/hr (in Michigan) the Tip is assumed.
Look it up. there is a different minimum wage for employees that depend on Tips as part of their income.
This does not apply to the Hostess, or the Pizza guy, but the waiter is in a different category.

@NjmchOne well i live in cali and afaik all states must pay all employess a minimal federal wage. This includes all types of work except if ur working off of comissions and watnot. but i am willing to believe u though i find it very very hard to believe. do u have a link where i can read wat u are saying? off of a official gov site or something like that. Now as for tips i have a different belief in whether someone should be tipped or not. but it would be too long for this comment.

@invalidacess I just googled it - In Michigan is is $2.65, In Cali - It is $8.00.
I guess you should know the local laws before tipping, or just don't be a cheap ass and tip 20%

Great video man - I'm going to New York, end of June with 2 mates. I really wanted to know what to do regarding this because it would be different in Ireland - very similar to Canada.
Luckily, 20% was what I had in mind before I even checked up on it. It's a bit of a mind field though when you take in bar staff, hotel staff, tour guides, cinema/theater staff. There should be a guide for tourists for all that too!

Bar staff is the same as a waiter 20%. As far as the other areas - I would just be giving my opinion, as I have never worked in those positions. I also wonder about Cab/shuttle drivers..
