Kim Jong-Il points up his army instead of the North Koreans' health. It's for this reason that many famines occured since 1990.
Generally, few reporters and NGOs are able to go in the country. Press is totally supervised by the government like all media. ( internet, radio, television, ... → propaganda ). Consequently, the North Koreans are indoctrinated and must dedicate themselves to a big cult of personality. Moreover, all their rights are restricted. For example, they must get dressed as the governments wants ( uniform for pupils ).
The Chinese and the south Korean frontiers are controled by the North Korean army.
Mostly, they live in poverty, as it was a century ago in Russia. ( no new technologies in agriculture, etc ... ). Yet, the government invested much money in order to built over-size roads and edifices.

Area : 121 000 km².
Population : around 23 000 000 inhabitants.
Infant mortality : 51%.
GDP per capita : 1 800$.
