For several years prior to the 1985 Cavalcade season the Shikellamy Marching Braves competed in the Yankee class of competition. This resulted in many seniors that would graduate in 1986 not having a State Championship season. During these years the total differences between a third place and First place finish was measured in Tenths of a point rarely a full point between winning and losing.
The 1985 season brought the Marching Braves to Hershey with an undefeated season, but we had not competed against some of the best bands in the state yet that season. With a band of nearly 300 members Shikellamy took the field and made up for the past few seasons of dissappointment.
Shikellamy won the Yankee classs division by 2.4 points, beating third place North Penn by more points(2.9) than we had lost to them totaled over the previous seasons. The Marching Braves won all of the caption catagories for Music , General effect, and Marching and Maneuvering( despite Jim Fox's two left feet rearing their missteps in front of a judge in the final minutes of the show).
With a feeling of true accomplishment the Braves captured the elusive Yankee class title in a flourish and style that lead them to a National competition later that year in Florida.
THANK YOU for posting this video! As a 14-year-old freshman who was a part of this moment in history, I was overwhelmed when we won States with this performance. And now, 26 years later, I am again overwhelmed at how spectacular our marching band was.

Even though I was only one year behind, seeing this 26 years later still gives me goosebumps. Those of us in the Class of 1990 and beyond always lived in the shadow of this show.

Ah, remember when we got booed off the field at the Eagles-Cowboys game in Philly during the opener, when we made the star, and during the double "D" formation at the end? I was laughing so hard I couldn't play! We knew it was going to happen though... :-) On the way off the field the guard said to me "your plane for Dallas is waiting for you!" Hahaha!
