In Kentucky ,Mastodon and other Pleistocene animals fossils where found .Modern animals lick the salt covered bones. Early U.S. presidents ,scientists and laymen where fascinated that elephants once roamed north America .The concept of extinction first started here.Stanley Hedeen, author of a new book on the site, Big Bone Lick: The Cradle of American Paleontology (2008), will bring the history and paleontology of Big Bone Lick to life through discussion and images at our November meeting.Hedeen, emeritus professor of biology and former dean of Arts and Sciences at Xavier University, has authored numerous scientific papers as well as two other locally centered books, The Mill Creek: An Unnatural History of an Urban Stream (1994), and Natural History of the Cincinnati Region (2006). Hedeen is a member of the Ohio Biological Survey Steering Committee, the Hamilton County Environmental Action Commission, the Cincinnati Museum Center Natural History Advisory Board, the Mill Creek Restoration Project Board of Trustees, the Green Umbrella Board of Trustees, and technical advisory committees of Hillside Trust, Little Miami Inc., and Oxbow, Inc. He received the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Quality Award for his "professional and community activities which serve to improve the quality of the environment." Dr. Hedeen earned a B.A. in Biology from Augustana College in Illinois and a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Minnesota.
