Ok, this is it. I LOVE this game. After two years without playing it, I decided to try it with ePSXe 1.6 using a special shader and a different graphics plugin. This game speaks of how visionary Polyphony Digital was. It almost looks like a PS2 game but no, guys, this is a PSX game! Now, all the delays and frame-rate issues you might see are caused by my laziness: I'm playing through the original disc. Also the sound is quite crappy thanks to Fraps.
Not really a superplay or anything like that (my joystick sucks...) but I still got S rank after two years =P

  • Also... is that SHADE by Feeder as the final boss theme?! The ISO I have has a different song as the main theme/final boss theme and it's just not the same (along with a glitchy opening, which ruins the experience even more). I've been looking everywhere for an ISO of this exact version of the game (since it's the one I played as a kid) to no avail.

Also, this isn't the japanese version, is it? I KNEW there was an english version with this song as the main theme besides the japanese one!

I bought the japanese version back then when they used to bring rare imports (didn't even know the game was localised) so the entire manual is in japanese... although this is a shooter so I only needed to know how to shoot stuff, heh. That's indeed Shade by Feeder. They put Static-X in the localisation but I found the song lacking, Shade is incredibly cheesy and rockish and, well, I like the song. What you are looking for is the NTSC-J version of the game.

  • Holy shit on a stick, man. What graphics plugin are you using? This looks freaking beautiful!

  • @Maverick2736

I'm using the old Peops but the game looks this beautiful even on the PSX. There is simply no longer stuff like this coming out... And boy, the world is in need of Kawamori-designed manly mechs with lock-on guided laser missiles.

  • @GloriousLight If I may ask one last thing...

What special shader are you using?

  • @Maverick2736

I was sure I replied that... Let me remember, it was Pete's OGL Natural Shader (I think the Ngemu forums had info on this but it's been well over three years since I last checked). I'm not sure if it still works with ePSXe 1.7 but it sure worked with this version of the emulator.

  • For people wondering about the music go to the Giantbomb page for Omega Boost. Explains everything.

  • @GloriousLight Much thanks, man!

  • Oh so it is the japanese version, after all. It's still awesome *shrug*.

And yes, Shade just fits the opening and final battle so damn well somehow. The Static-X song doesn't compare. This game is by far THE most incredibly underrated gem there is on the PS1, and a fine contender of such title to so many other obscure games in video game history as a whole.

Thanks for the help, dude. Great video, and great channel too.

  • @firzen48

Yeah, it also gives you barely a second to react when it does the gigantic laser attack (the one that can 1-hit kill the player). Although the battle in Hard mode is 10x greater due to the sheer level of craziness. I wish they could make a spiritual successor of Omega Boost...
