- Me drumming along to this awesome Phil Collins track. I suspect that many people consider this to be a simple Genesis song to cover, but if you ask me, the more you try and play the precise Phil Collins part, the more you realise that it is not that easy! It's very deceptive. After all these years of playing it, I still don't know exactly how he did it! Beautiful and perfect drumming by Phil. And hand's up if you love the way he tuned those toms! Brilliant.

  • I didn´t thought that it was easy. Mostly drummers are not to be noticed, and sometimes you think "boy, do something more exciting", but the Squonk-Drums give the song the energy it has.

  • The Squonk is a legendary creature reputed to live in the Hemlock forests of northern Pennsylvania.

  • Great! Great!!

  • @leftystrat76 'and birds fall from the sky'!!!! You are dead right!

Thanks for letting us know how it was done my friend. I bet we ALL wish we could get a drum sound like that (and of course, we all wish we could play like Phil too)!!

I am humbled by your compliments :-)

  • @jouxplan Not a chorus-- it's a really fast delay, 30 ms or so... so it sounds like double-tracking, but it's not. Just BIG, like it was recorded in a big bare room. And seeing as Phil's moves were already big, the effect just makes the drumline explosive. Pair his snare/kick up with that Taurus, and birds fall from the sky :)

jouxplan I've already complimented you on this, but hell yeah I'll say it again-- SPOT ON. You've got it nailed! Good work.

  • @jouxplan

Hi again, yes, Collins was a real dirtbag on the drums. We use "dirtbag" in germany if we are really impressed by somone if it is very very hard to try doing the same.

I´m happy that my guesses about your setup and hardwear have been more ore less correct.

Was playing drums many years ago, but only as a hobby and never in a band.

    Keep on drumming jouxplan!

    friendly regards
