The zipper is water resistant but I wouldn't call it water proof.

After way too much time trying everything on and researching, I actually did end up with this pack. Its very nice.

Part of the problem trying it on for comparison is that its like trying on running shoes: We tend to be attracted to softer padding and thus our immediate reaction is often "wow, this one is more comfy" But in the long run (provided it is properly placed) the stiffer padding often means more support and less breakdown of the material.
