One of your tools is a metal piece with a rounded section that fits around your fingers then somewhat of a flat but movable end on the other side. You trim larger sections from pots with it in previous videos. You hold the top with one hand and use the other hand with that tool to remove excess clay from the sides of the piece, particularly the larger ones. What is this and how-to make it/buy it?

Hi Simon!

Please let us see your trim tools generally. I use your videos as a teaching tool before I sit at the wheel and then after throwing I go back and look at the same video, very useful.

well this has shown me the sort of tools i'd need to do ths sort of work but i don't think i'd keep em all in the same tool box XD its sort of over loaded

he doesn't - he is so well organised .. but I have a box just like it! I am a bit of a person when it comes to buying in tools and it is sometimes just a waste - I have a pastry wheel - never knew what to do with it in the kitchen! I have a lattice maker and it works so well on clay. I think on the wheel sometimes I just need a few things, the essential ones, my needle,sponge on a stick, flexible shaper, stick like the one simon showed and a bat

I use sponge stain brushes alot of times, they don't leave bristle marks or scratches if they are clean, they are cheap and available a many dollar stores, somtimes in sets of several sizes.

I leave mine upright in jar or plastic tool caddie by each wheel

( like most of my tools ) so they don't get crushed or bent. I have also used old shaving brushes.

Your new box sounds fun, do you need it to take to classes or do you work at home.

Upgraded from a dollar general plastic box to a larger plastic Lowe's toolbox. Lots of room, reasonable pricing, & extra storage in the top for sponges & 4-piece pick set. Pick set includes curly, 90-degree angle, straight, and I forget the shape of last but I used almost all; they work great for various things. I need a paint brush now to dust off the debris when trimming now. Not sure which would be best at not removing clay or leaving brush lines in leather clay.

I use plastic coated picture hanging wire, attached to clothes pins, clip them on a bag of clay , on a nail on the wall, or your water bucket.

Your hole tools, Simon? They look like old shoe maker tools, you know the type they used to make eyelets in leather!

Everywhere you go these days drinking straws come in different sizes, or coffee sticks.

I love making whistles so I collect or recycle all different sizes. If they get plugged up squeeze out the clay or clipp off and start again!

I used that peice of galvaznized he showed first. That works better than any wooden one I've used. Now I'm no pro but I do know something about utility of tools. I liked it so much I'm hunting the perfect peice of stainless spring steel for mine!
