London Radio Dance Band dir. by Sid Firman - The Devil Is Afraid Of Music, Columbia 1927 (UK)

Sid was a brother of the famous British bandleader, Bert Firman. Here's another recording of that excellent and so little known musician: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0_t1DKaiLI

  • This is a typical vibrant arrangement from his Columbia period 1926-1928. In 1928 Jack Payne became leader of the official BBC Dance Orchestra.

The last record I have of Sidney Firman, was issued on the Imperial label in April 1932. He died later that year aged 36.

Thank you for uploading this engaging record.

  • Hi Jackpaynefan, all these are precious informations about Syd Firman, whose role in a history of British dance bands hides deep below a huge shadow cast on him by his age-old brother, Bert

  • Great posting. Very enjoyable. Like the illustrations too.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • Corrie, thanks! I was sure you'd love that hot and lovely tune

  • Wonderful to at last hear a record from the 3rd Firman brother.Sid led a fine band, which was the BBC's first band (2LO)Great arrangements and confident playing. This record is one of Sid's best.He died suddenly about 1931,yet Bert lived 93 years.Sid is the forgotten Firman but there actually was a 4th who played rarely

  • Thank you for your information, Davidglow3. I know he was leading the BBC dance orchestra for some time in the end of 1920s, before Henry Hall became the famous BBC music man. But not too much can be found in the internet about his life

  • There are some records by the London Radio Dance Band on the Radio label, about 1928.

  • This vivacious, delightful music should make the Devil afraid. I love the pictures , especially the old radios and phonographs.
