Fences that had been erected on the sand dunes at Mermaid Beach have now been washed away due to recent sand erosion. The absence of the fences has created a much more natural view of the dunes and ocean. Please don't replace the fences.

  • I notice that the front corner post at 0.09 is only about 200mm out of the ground. These posts are usually 2.4m long. That means about 2m of sand has built up since the fence was constructed. How far do you think the ocean would have made it without that extra height??

The job of the fence is to keep people, dogs, motorbikes, etc off the delicate vegetation growing on the dune which aids in catching the build up of sand. You get to choose, the top view or eventual inundation

  • You are correct, but the sand still builds up due to wind and wave action. The interesting thing is that very few people walk on the dunes even without the fences. The frontal dunes which support the new vine growth that holds the sand together are never fenced off and despite this, they continue to grow and thrive. I choose the view because the dunes will look after themselves.

  • I love your videos of the Gold Coast, something niggles me with this one though.

The dunes weren't always there, if my recollections are accurate. It was the fencing and dune creation projects that brought these dunes back from previous erosion from both weather and human sources.

  • Thanks for your comment. The dunes were always there. I have photographs of the dunes taken 55 years ago, when as children a lot of our time was spent on Mermaid Beach, when there were no fences. Dunes come and go. It's a naturally occurring event. The dunes built up without the fences, and will continue to do so. I believe the only fences required are from the decks leading down to the beach. Leaving the dunes unfenced not only looks good but saves a lot of money.

  • I work at the gold coast city council if you have a problem contact them.

  • I lived around Nobby Beach during my high school years. I think I remember having a bit of a booze up in the dunes at Mermaid Beach actually, and then someone had an asthma attack. Quite a drama. :)
