A rare music gem and a piece of music history. Recorded during one of her first Okeh Records sessions in 1926.
Before there was Mattie, Anna or Rosetta, there was... Arizona Juanita Dranes--a blind COGIC missionary, singer and pianist who is credited as the first person to ever play piano on a gospel record. This recording was in 1926, some six years before Thomas Dorsey's Precious Lord. Arizona Dranes is the musician Sister Rosetta Tharpe credited with influencing her raucous, syncopated style; Jerry Lee Lewis also credits her playing as an influence. Missionary Dranes' style of barrelhouse piano and intense sanctified singing essentially created what we know today as the gospel beat. Encouraged to record by COGIC founder Bishop C.H. Mason, Dranes recorded 16 songs for Okeh Records, from 1926-1929. As a result of the Great Depression, she stopped recording; however, she continued to travel and play for Bishop Mason at COGIC conventions and convocations.
Being educated doesn't make you better. It all probability her music became whitened. All Black music came from the folk tradtion, and most of the folk were uneducated. The best Black are those folks closet to core Black culture.

Roberta Martin did not copy her style from Arizona Dranes. She was musically INFLUENCED by Dranes and incorporated some of the elements of Dranes's style into her gospel, but unlike Dranes, Martin was educated (with a Master's Degree in Music) and was able to refine her favorite elements of music from various genres to format HER unique style. Listening to Martin's music with a viable ear will easily dismiss your assertion.

I read that at one time it was considered almost heresy to play piano in church. Good thing they changed their minds.
