@theVilleKY I remember 1999 very vividly, it was my favorite Triple Crown season. Charismatic and Menifee was SO close to becoming Affirmed and Alydar.

the 2nd place horse Menifee was the best horse in this race.........if the Derby was 50 more feet he would have won easily..........

I BET Charismatic to win & place at 31 to 1 and made a small fortune.
D' WAYNE has his ways; used to be: IF he wore a suit bet his horse if a blue blazer & khaki pants= no bet . SUITS are for pictures in the WINNERS CIRCLE
I.E. 1999 Preakness & 2000 Belmont ( Commendable 20- 1 ) I had them ALL ..... CHEERS

No knock on Durkin, he's terrific, but very few track announcers made races as legitimately exciting as Dave Johnson. How appropriate then that Johnson, who was present for most of Secretariat's big races, would be able to call Big Red's son's win at what was his last televised Derby call.

I remember this derby very well becasue I had Menifee but I still recall the finish "and it's Charismatic holding on to win it by a head"
