Rather than dish out several hundred bucks for an O-scale British Hornby or Bassett-Lowke, I pulled some old Marx trains out of my junkbox and gave them a makeover. The set not only looks good, it runs good as well. With one new spray can of British racing green paint (the other colors for the cars were from leftover spray cans), one brass stack (a bearing cover from OSH) , a taller steamdome (a scaled down vacume block for a carburator) from my car parts box. I also downloaded and printed decals of old British Railway hearalds for the loco and tender. After repainting the trailing cars, I applied adheasive letters from Michael's craft store to the rolling stock. The project cost me around $25.00. The engine was an old Marlines steamer with a broken cowcatcher.
The trench bags are actually flour bags from Michael's crafts. The old truck on the flat is a British Petrolium petrol lorry (Readers Digest trucks from a yardsale find). The tanker represents Royal Dutch Shell.
Since the filming, I have removed the bell, added leading and trailing spoked wheels from a Lionel junker and painted the wheel rims and spokes bright red. I also painted the nicel boiler front green to match the rest of the engine. I also discovered an old rusty pre war Marx passenger car which I cleaned up, painted green and added the British Rail hallmark. When I finish moving to my new home and unpack, I shall make some updated films of my trains and new layout.
Thanks Ken,
I had to dig out my old "White Alblum" for that song. I need to pay another visit to SLO, the only place in California nicer than Chico. 8-)
