Sorry we startled you, Elena. We regularly test our nuclear plant emergency sirens to ensure they're working correctly. Sirens are tested at 11:50 a.m. on the second Wednesday of the first month in each quarter. The tests last about 3 minutes. If it were a real emergency, the sirens would sound repeatedly.
Mark your calendar to avoid afternoon ice cream outings on these 2010 dates: July 14 and October 13.

If it was during the weekday around 11am or so , then it most likely was a test. Duke Power does a test once a month or so.
