This type of music is known as Maluf. It originated in Andalusia Spain when the Arabs ruled most of Spain. When the Arabs were expelled from Spain some of them went to North Africa and took this type of music with them. As a result Morocco, Tunisia & Algeria also have a similar style of Maluf music although it is known by a different name in those countries. (find out more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andalusian_classical_music).

The artist that sung the song in my video is called Hassan Arabi. There are many groups in Libya who sing Maluf, but Hassan Arabi and his group are one of the most well known.

If you would like to download this song (it's called Ya Man Khalaqat Al Wara) and others you can get them here:

  • The music is excellent and rare, but couldn't the quality of sound be a lil better?

  • @Alnasrlina: It could be better, but unfortunately I don't know how. Can you help?

  • والله فن عظيم واصيل ياهل ليبيا ... تحيتي لكم من اخوكم بالسعودية

  • I'm totally memorized by such wonderful Libyan chant... It reminds me of the monastic Gregorian chant and the very liturgical recitative. I wish Libyans would preserve such wonderful treasures and archive them where they find them.

    Please keep them coming.

Such uplifting melodies even linguistic ignorant like myself can appreciate such great repertory.

God save Libya and long live Libya free form tyranny.
