My 45 gallon aquarium is about 8 years old. There are 3 fantails, 1 red cap oranda, 1 shubunkin, 1 golden algae eater and 1 cory catfish. The catfish is as old as the tank, which amazes me, since they seem to do better in warmer water! When the fish get too large for the tank, I transfer them to my 1900 gallon pond where they have plenty of room and much more fun, I'm sure :) I have an algae problem in the tank periodically, so any suggestions would be welcomed. I do monthly water changes and the PH is neutral. Thanks!

  • hi-havent read through all the comments so maybe you found a solution to your algae problems.

i had the same prob-i woke up one day and it seemed it had grown over night. i would scrub it but it would return the next day, so i went to petsmart and asked one of the ladies there and she suggested i get a "Mystery snail" or apple snail.

it works wonderfully!! although since you have a 45gal you may need 3-5 (mines only a 16gal)

but try the mystery snails they clear the algae well and...

  • @Mamboleo1995 Thank you for the info! Unfortunately, I have not had luck with snails. However, I have changed this tank from goldfish to tropical and there is no algae problem now! Yea :) I will have to post a new vid of the new tank...

  • not sure if you tried this already but try not to use the tank light as much. i also had excessive algae so i moved the tank into a room that gets natural light. i turn the fish tank light on maybe for 2-3 hours a day at the most and noticed that the algae problem went away.

  • @juicebag83 Thank you for your comment. Since this video, I have changed this tank to tropical, also only have the light on for about 3 hours a day, and have not had any algae problems, yea!

  • Maybe you ought to change water weekly...I do it in my three goldfish tanks...hell a lot of work but rewarding when u see how happy and healthy the goldfish are. Algae growth also depends on the lighting.....do u leave your lights on the whole day and night? Algae tend to grow with lots of light. Does algae grow on the plkants or on the glass? Use a magnet cleaner which will remove the algae growth on the tank.

  • @CharmySi Thank you so much for your tips. I was so tired of trying everything to keep the algae down, that I transferred the goldfish to my pond in July - they are so much more happy there, I can tell ;) - and changed this tank to a tropical tank! Threw everything out and started over a few months ago. No algae problems and the tropical fish are doing really great! Will post a video of the new tank soon :)
