@jezmuff The surfer was disoriented from being tumbled underwater for a minute straight. I've been in that situation for 10 foot surf. the surf in the movie is at least 40 feet...

I don't get it - if a diver without flippers or gear can dive down and swim back up, why couldn't the surfer?
