Fascinating document of film history!

The word "masterpiece" gets thrown around a lot. At the time this was made, yes, the visuals and effects, not to mention the insidiousness of HAL (which is somewhat betrayed by the trailer, by the way) were groundbreaking and admirable; but none of that makes it a great film.

What bothers me is the idea that films are either/or. Star Wars was a shoot 'em up, but it was also a grand parable on par with 2001; better, in my opinion, because it did what 2001 tried to do: reach the audience.

And most of the credit for the masterpiece goes to Arthur C. Clarke, anyway, since he wrote the original story.

Well that's your opinion. I still think it's boring with over rated.
