Beautiful...now if I were his age back then...well, anyway, he's got a great voice and he's incredibly attractive. ::swoon::
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that he looks better than George Clooney (please don't hate me).

This is the way just plain great singing... man, woman, baritone, soprano, tenor... all should strive for this kind of ease of tone and expression. Such a fantastic artist!!!

@singerswithpresence could you tell more about the competition what you remember? do you really think he was much better than the other finalists? i am not surprised:) but would like to hear more from an eyewitness. you are so lucky. do you remember which lieder Dmitri sang in the competition? should he have won the lieder prize according to you:) ? how were the other finalists beside Dmitri and Bryn Terfel?

Thank you for sharing this - it takes me back. We were there cheering on Bryn Terfel but when this chap came out he was such a stand out, one knew from the first bars (just like with Ms Mattila) there was no one close - I think he really took the lieder as well. Whatever one thinks of how he has developed this was an incredible voice & presence for a young singer.

@bassfanne45 I will pass on your compliment. I just spent a great night with him and his wife last week in Massachussets. He is now 73, and has been deaf since he was 54. But he is happy, as happy a man as I have ever met, in fact. A legend. We listened to his exquisite TV broadcast of Fahrendes Gesellen from back in the 70's with Haitink, then sang through the Songs of Travel the next morning. He played. I sang. My girlfriend recorded it. Treasured memories.

It seems,he hits some notes from tenor's range here.
I've had the pleasure hearing Dmitri live on occasion in Boston and at the Met. His voice is that there is velvety warmth that is not picked up in recording. As for the size of the instrument, his voice is definitely on the smaller size for Verdi. Which means his voice lends itself to mid Verdi as opposed to early or late which is better for a larger, virile, and athletic instrument. I hear a sound from Dmitri that fills a concert effortlessly and is ample enough to reach standing room.
