Bjelland formed Babes in Toyland in 1987 in Minneapolis, after playing around San Francisco for several years in various bands which featured, at various times, Jennifer Finch of L7 and Courtney Love of Hole. After releasing a single on Sub Pop's singles club, Babes in Toyland came to the attention of Sonic Youth, who took them on a tour of Europe. Soon, they recorded their abrasive debut, Spanking Machine, with producer Jack Endino; one more independent EP followed before they signed to Reprise. Between labels, original bassist Michelle Leon left the group.

  • I would have loved to be Kat Bjeland's thing! :P

  • Bikini Kill and Bratmobile associated themselves with the term "riot grrrl". Kill Rock Stars was created so they could be riot grrrl. Although those sorts of bands sound similar, the genre is based more around feminist lyrics than what the music sounds like. So, Babes in Toyland aren't riot grrrl, but the fact that you all don't know what category to put them in means they did something right. They're original. They don't have the exact same sound as a thousand other bands. Good for them.

  • ive always liked the intensity in babes in toyland , but just could never get over there "girl power" "You go girl" element. i don't give a fuck if your a woman, its nothing special to be a woman or a man. let us be measured by our intensity.

  • @blonkyman not really grunge was a mix of punk and metal and other little things, you listen to these and you listen to Nirvana or SoundGarden Babes in toyland were punk the other 2 I mentioned were grunge, Nirvana had metal elements and also pop and so did SoundGarden they also had heavy sounding songs there's a big difference in punk and grunge, grunge was a mix of punk and metal Babes in toyland aren't so they're punk

  • @wipers86 Both of those bands are from washington though and grunge is just punk from washington in the 90's

  • @Jojos25 the gits and bikini kill were also punk bands that got mistaken for grunge

  • @Jojos25 babes in toyland were not grunge, they were a punk band that got mistaken for a grunge band, because of the time they came along

  • In my opinion, she has the best female voice with Julie London and Edith Piaf!
