In Washington, Howard University students respond to Rev. Jeremiah Wright's controversial comments

Sunday May 4th, 2008

"This most recent attack on the black church is not an attack on Jeremiah Wright; it is an attack on the black church, " Rev. Jeremiah Wright said at the National Press Club in Washington on Monday. Senator Barack Obama responded to the remarks rejecting them as divisive and not accurately reflective of the black church. The Real News Network's Matt Palevsky spoke to students at Howard University about Wright's comments and Obama's response.

  • Most colleges are mostly white. The reason HBCUs exist in the first place is because blacks were not allowed to go to college. So learn your history before you try to comment. White people go to HBCUs as well as other races. It's just predominantly black, just like most other colleges are predominantly white.

  • If Obama wins, white institutional racism will still exist. People of white European descent will still be the dominate culture in America. Black on black crime will exist, kids born out of wedlock will still exist, and economic/education disparities will still exist. Obama's presidency (if he wins) will be more symbolic than substantive for blacks in America. The Exec branch, the Congress, and the Supreme Court will continue to be vastly white. Without him in the Senate, it will be all WHITE!!

  • ..Additionally, because Howard is currently ranked in the top 100 of schools in the U.S.

  • ..Howard has matriculated thousands of successful individuals the majority being of African descent. Because it is a rare occasion for minorities in America (specifically African Americans) to be afforded an opportunity where they can enjoy a positive educational environment in which they learn, among other things, their true history and identity,(many for the first time) HBCUs provide an unmatched richness scarcely found at Predominantly White Institutions...

  • As a student currently enrolled at Howard University I find it necessary to correct your seemingly uninformed response to the video posted above. Yes, HU was founded during Reconstruction by Congress as an attempt to rectify "The Negro Question."(what shall we do w/ the current mass of newly freed former slaves) Initially, Howard was founded on the premise of educating the many offspring of prominent Whites whom just happened to be Mulatto. Since its founding, along with other HBCUs, Howard..

  • Preach on Wright.

  • This is typical - how can they say that Barack should be true to himself and embrace these comments? Or say that if McCain's preacher said these comments that they wouldnt be on CNN? If McCain was associated with anyone that said the derogatory racist comments against blacks, he not only wouldnt be the GOP nominee, he'd be fined and probably in jail!

Racism is alive - and it's very alive in the reverse form.

  • Rev Wright just bitched about politics

    thats it

    who cares?

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE 1ST AMENDMENT???

the thing is that john mccain's spiritual advisers like John Hagee and Rod Parsley made much worse comments that wright

  • The media is using this to cut the legs out from under Obama. Rev. Wright is not running for president, Barack is. If people care about a candidate's religious beliefs, why the hell didn't anyone make a big deal about GWB saying God talked directly to him? It's a smear campaign, that's all...because if Barack wins, it won't be business as usual. For the first time in years, I have hope for the future and for my children's future.

  • Theo doesn't know what he is talking about...ask actual Trinitarians at Howard

  • Barak Obama's government is best described by French author Pierre Boulle in his bestseller La planète des singes.

Howard University was founded by the US government, an act of Congress, at a time when Blacks weren't allowed in many universities, or their admission was very restricted. It had a reason to exist at a time. It was open from the beginning to people of all colors. However it lacks the academic standing it once had.
