Siva is known as the destroyer of evil and ignorance, not destroyer for the sake of destruction but in a positive way for the sake of regeneration.
OM NAMO SIVAYAH as mantra protection against evil.

@angelforfreedom The Aryans didnt found or have anything to do with Hinduism, The aryan theory has been prooven wrong. Hinduism is far older than 1500 BC. Now that the Swaraswati river has been found we know Hinduism is closer to 5000 or more years old. The arian theory was proposed by Christians because they cant stand another religion being older than their rather new religion. With modern science their theory is falling apart. See my blog at theyuha.blogspot.com

Karma & Rebirth means We are ACCOUNTABLE for our actions. We take Responsibility.
Karma & Rebirth means that we enjoy the Gift of Life, over & over again!
Karma & Rebirth means there is no place for a Hell, no sadistic God running a torture chamber
Karma & Rebirth means that We EARN everything. A Hindu must never beg nor take anything that is unearned
Karma & Rebirth means we Hindus earn Praise FROM God! Anyone fool can praise God, but Blessed are the Hindus that aim to earn Praise FROM God!

This is soome south indian 's view on shiva. Shiva is primordial god. He was originally Rudra during vedic times. He was equivalent to Indra(who has a thunderbolt that destroys all).
So the progress is somewhat like this
Rudras-->indra--->Shiva.

shiva was worshipped in north too and in kashmir shivaism is deeply popular

Shiva was worshiped by all Civilizations just in different forms and names but if you examine all these Gods, They had a common similarity in many aspects.
The Hindus worshiped him as Shiva
The Minoans worshiped him as Poseidon
The Greeks worshiped him as Neptune
The Egyptians worshiped him as Osiris
The Arabians worshiped him as Allah
The Christians worshiped him as Holy Spirit

You are saying vedics were not aware of the other SHIVA excuse me who else was around ... who would give them that knowledge ... they were practicaly the first civilsation .. so the only way to know about kind shiva would be to go into their future.... vedic religion was worship of nature and gods of fertility etc... much much later purans were written ... this is when shiva's form as we know him know took shape ...

@mridu2011 The Vedic civilization was neither the first nor the only. The Indian subcontinent was a heterogenous society in those days as it is now. In fact the Vedic priests constituted a minority but they wielded enoromous power and influence. Saivism thrived as a tradition in itself for a long time before it was integrated into the Vedic tradition. Vedic people were not mere nature worshippers. If you want to know about the significance of the Vedic tradition, please read my book Brahman.

unless for pure academic purposes, it is less important to know where vedic people came from, how mythology changed over time etc etc.We all understand hinduism is a tapestry or rather a metamorphosis of various ancient linguistic, cultural and political forces that were present in the subcontinet.
what is important is to understand the fact that vedas have codified 'true wisdom' in some form and making an effort to introspect on that wisdom.

We cannot understand the wisdom of our scriptures without knowing about their past. If you want to introspect about the wisdom of the Vedas you need to understand the imagery and symbolism involved in their composition. It can be known when you understand the how they're composed. The Secret of the Vedas by Sri Aurobindo is an example. The truth is Gods do not evolve, but our knowledge of gods do. Our misconception of gods play an important role in our collective spiritual evolution.

@hinduwebsite What matters is the practices that bring you to your higher self. Every thing is within, all you have to do is quiet your mind and devote yourself.
