Der Schimmelreiter is a novelle written by the German poet and novellist Theodor Storm in 1888.
The story based on the legend of the Schimmelreiter, the ghost of the grey horse and its rider, which appears on the Friesian shores when storm threatens the dikes. These consist of an old dike and of the Hauke-Haien-Deich, built by Hauke Haien, the Schimmelreiter, a hundred years ago in the middle of the 18th c.; of the two, Haien's dike provides the stronger protection against the sea. The character of its long-dead builder is still persistently maligned by the superstitious villagers, but a more detached view is secured by letting the enlightened schoolmaster narrate the Binnenerzählung containing episodes in the life of Hauke Haien, his rise to be Deichgraf, his achievement, and his tragic end.

Its a cd with songs in the 5 languages of the danish/german border-area (Slesvig-Holsten); low and high german, frisian, standard danish and the danish dielect of South Jutlandic.
