Chicago powerhouse WLS ran these jingles shortly before switching to a package of acapella jingles. Some very dynamic cuts here from Series 34, "The Tenth Dimension" - specifically 34A- "The Power Of Love."

One rather cool element of this package was that it had a signature built in; a 6-note melody line to which the phrase "With the Power Of Love" was sung. More often, the melody was played without vocals as an intro or ending to a jingle.

Series 34 had jingles with a a bit of a harder edge than the traditional Big Band-based jingles; in fact there are several cuts that were fairly soulful for radio jingles.

Vocally, there were a variety of styles that ranged from the mixed male/female vocal group, to PAMS' ever-popular male group with their Four Freshmen-style and including powerful solos provided by the wonderful Lucy Crane.

I'm not sure, but I don't believe WLS bought the entire PAMS package, but what they did buy were among some of the best of the package. ( A side note; at the opening of this package are several custom jingles for WLS that were not part of the Series 34 Package.)

  • Cool Jingles

  • @desertrat1111 Definitely! I love this series!

  • This is the same package used by WFIL Philadelphia.

  • @gsnfan That WFIL version is one of the best I've ever heard. Series 34 was a good seller- there were quite a lot of stations that bought this package. WLS had just a fraction of the jingle cuts in this package which is too bad as it's a really fantastic set of jingles. I've heard it sung for many stations, but there is something about the WFIL version that tops all of them. It's as if that one day the PAMS singers tried to top their usual excellence, the vocals absolutely rock on that one

  • Anybody else think that WLS could make a profit as a classic hits station, again? Nobody, but, nobody, listens to talk radio, anymore!

  • @DaveWollenberg I would like to think WLS could be a hit as a classic hits station, but I don't know if people would listen loyally or just tune in for a bit out of curiosity. I happen to like the sound of those classic Top 40 stations, especially when they had that Bigger Than Life Reverb going on. The music just sounded so BIG and booming. I remember hearing What A Fool Believes on WLS and that echo made that song ROCK!!!!

  • @RaldyV Yep, I've heard jingles like that too.

  • @tomovox They also recorded this line as "Yesteryear", insert the name of station, and then they record and play the Year of the release of the song they're gonna play.

  • @RaldyV Not neccessarily, though it may have made for a nice coincidental happening. I think the "Yesterday" cut was supposed to introduce a song that was maybe popular a year or more ago. There were a lot of jingles, even in the 60's, that made a reference to "oldies" or "solid gold" songs- hits from yesteryear. I'm sure the creators of this jingle package figured with "Yesterday," being such a huge Beatles hit, it would make for a good jingle for those older hits.

  • 2:06. "Yesterday"? Is this reference to Paul McCartney's "Yesterday"?
