  • Games can be inspiration.

  • Well, Gmod is extremely sandboxy, but I still think of it as a game.

  • congrats for 1 year

I usually use games to shut down the real world and all its problems for a some hours in any day i like gaming and specially i like FPS-games but when i played COD4 and COD6 (MW2) i enjoyed them too much i think that too game were like just when you watch a MOVIE .. thats sad that i play too much but i dont really had any real life good experiences (i suck at school etc) and so i found my way out of problems with gaming. so im lost into the virtual world a bit but its ok4me

  • And I say that through my own understanding of what makes a "video game" (which as TanukiKGA pointed out below, is only loosely, at best, a game anymore). There are certain things that I can see being more of an... "interactive art" production or something.

Like this shitty PC 'game' I had back in the day called Cyberswine. One of those choose-your-path movies, but rendered so it looked like a normal game. I can't put it in the same category, though it may deconstruct to the same composition.

  • And I realize while typing the end of my last comment that... well, we already do that. It's exactly what we're doing. Paying money (or... not... pirates!) to block out the world for a short time and be occupied on a different realm of a relative/dependent scale and complexity.

I don't think games will ever become more than that.

But, I do think they will have the ability to get closer and closer to 'reality', or at least how our sensory system interprets it.

  • That's a scary thought of TOTAL immersion in a game.

Why live in the real world at all?

I don't know if you ever watched Red Dwarf... (I sure hope so!) - there's the episode where they all wake up and find that they were just a bunch of clots playing some video game (which was of course a halucination within itself... that's just silly!). Drop a wad of cash, and lose a section of your life to this other reality in the most complete and extreme instance.

  • I agree with what yu are saying Dan, i play games to escape from problems in the real world, such as frustration with exams and education, but i also play games because they are really enjoyable, i am like u i have alot of retro consoles aswell and i still play on them, i like to go back on other consoles to see how the graphics and design have developed into our games today, anyway nice vid man keep it up :)

  • It was quite nice to see your grubby mug on my subscriptions list. :P

Prinny had me keeping myself from twisting my PSP. Then, Yakuza I actually tried to snap the controller for about half a second... but luckily I'm a weakling.

I don't like the thought of realism these days. Watching movies or playing very good games can make me feel uncomfortable if I'm becoming too attached to the characters or the atmosphere - I realize I'm on the outside and will return to work/school/food/sleep.

  • You should check out Summer wars. It's a pretty decent anime that explores an alternate now where everyone is connected to one huge game. It has some themes similar to what you're talking about.

  • addictive. It makes me think of people in Star Trek with holo-addiction. People have trouble pulling away from something that requires no physical work, rewards you all the time, promotes competition, is "social", and really allows them to be in control more than they have over their real lives.

Gaming will certainly evolve interestingly in the future. Just look at something like the Nintendo Vitality Sensor that is bringing you closer to the game itself. Who knows where it will go. Good to c ya
