http://www.davidfranceviolin.com David France while volunteering at a school in Liberia Costa Rica meets a student who for the entire class did not try at all. In this video David tries to get him to join in with his classmates! : )

In the fall of 2011 David France, violinist and Fellow in New England Conservatory's El Sistema initiative, traveled to the Central American country of Costa Rica to discover their response to the music phenomenon out of Venezuela affectionately known as El Sistema. In 2007 Sistema Nacional de Educacion Musical was launched in Costa Rica and is nationally referred to as SiNEM. There are currently 29 projects around the country serving 8,000 students. The Department of Youth and Culture is the governmental umbrella office directing the projects. They provide Instruments and teachers for each of the local programs. "Un instrumento para todos" is their motto which translates to "An instrument for all." They are guided by the belief that music education is not only a right for the children of Costa Rica but is an important tool in the fight against poverty and is also effective in producing positive social change in the lives of disadvantaged youth. First and foremost SiNEM is a social program but in the eyes of the kids it is a supportive and demanding musical community where friendships are formed and music is learned. Parents are the projects most important ally. They make sure their children arrive at rehearsals, they prepare and serve snacks and other meals, bring their children to numerous concerts, and enthusiastically support project directors. SiNEM's central office only provides teachers and instruments and it is up to the local directors to find a location. The real heroes of each project are these directors who have built rehearsal spaces onto their houses and one creatively uses an old prison. There is an insatiable thirst and appreciation for learning. SiNEM is now welcoming international volunteers to help with the enormous task of bringing music to their youth. I hope you are inspired to join the international anthem to change children's lives through music.
