The Center for American Progress's Jonathan Jacoby shares his thoughts on Circuit City's announced plan to lay off over 3,000 workers and ask them to reapply for their jobs at lower wages.

What if 40 hours a week were enough?

  • beyonce is 400x richer than the average singer, somthing wrong here? all of these corporate whores are nothing, when americans unite and say if we can't have, neither can you, then we will be getting somewhere.

  • Let me say this. The power to stop layoffs is in the companies. All they have to do is eat some loss for 1 year or 2. Not lose money just lose money increase from prior year. If each company does this the problem vanishes overnight.

But no.... "We want more each year else off with there heads!" The greedy consuming all the resource and unwilling to save the country are the terrorist. For it is them who choose to ruin the economy by not caring not sharing.

  • thats called comunism thats not a good thing but neither is greed which is why we are in fail city

  • I wish the retail workers of america could go on strike...

  • No surprise there. Circuit City has always treated it's workers poorly. Management is openly hostile to the workers. They stole my commission so many times I might as well have been hourly. I see they are filing Chapter 11. Frankly, I hope they go completely out of business, never to return. Companies that treat workers that poorly don't deserve to stay in business.

  • I am right there with you wabio. Well said.

  • Shop at independent aka "mom and pop" stores, they really work hard, put real effort into their work, and actually care about the customer. Corporations like circuit shitty fabricate and make "standards" for customer service. Standards that only go as far as to kiss your ass until you spend your money, but the moment you have a problem with your product, unless you spent more money on a "service plan" and it's past the return date, they send you away and pretend like you never really exsisted.

  • May circuit city burn to the ground for it evil treatment to it's own employee's. This company's stock is below 2 dollars a share, i eagerly await the day they go out of buissness.

  • I'm an Exporter and Importer making a lot of Money now because of Supply and Demand in other countries, Since Demand is Slow and Supply is great here the USA I can buy at wholesale prices and since in my home country Supply is Low and Demand is High I'm making a killing, There is a lot of ways to make Money now, Even if the Market gets worse I would double up my earnings at 100% or even 130% because of our bad economy.I'm not hiring illegals or Outsourcing, I'm buying American and creating jobs.

  • Not really a Republican or Democrat issue. Big company's do not want to pay their workers any money. How do they expect us to buy stuff if we are not making any money.
