um, the video shows this guy going over the speed limit with the siren off 98% of the time. it doesnt matter if the only thing around you is grass and road, sirens need to be on. "prevention is key"? isnt that what a siren was made for? prevention. i dont know where you live but in washington, if you are responding to an emergency in a fire truck, lights and sirens need to be on at all times. that is the law

@iambossnuffsaid I went back and rewatched the video just now. If find your assertion of speeding to be interesting, as the speedometer is not visible most of the time. I see nothing here which is in violation of MA state law, department policy, or safe practice. The siren was used as needed to warn traffic.

I can respect the fact that the law, policy, or practice may differ in your locality.

@iambossnuffsaid Less traffic = less need for siren. The intersection is controlled by an Opticom; we find it safer and less confusing to use the technology to let the green light get traffic moving, then make noise as needed. Screaming up behind unsuspecting people panics them and increases the likelihood of a crash. The siren is no legal or moral defense if there is a crash. Prevention is the key.

@iambossnuffsaid we also have to keep the siren on until we arrive on scene, but we may switch it off on our own responsibility. And we do that, we actually hardly use our siren and still move fast AND safe through city traffic: our max. response time from just one single station to the last corner of the city is 6 minutes.

@80firerescue but why would you use it when there's hardly traffic, nobody in your way? You know even here in our city the FD hardly uses the siren, and the big trucks move with an average speed of 40 mph through the traffic, and they didn't had an accident for at least 4 years

@EdgevilleRWY I see no problem in this video, I live in the United Kingdom and if there isn't much traffic about, then our emergency services don't need to use their sirens, also it is about noise, if you think about an emergency during the night, it is unwanted noise during sleep time so they try not to use sirens as much as they can, as to not be of any nuisance. Also I thought that if you're on an emergency that you're allowed to do any speed just as long as your safe and well co-ordinated

i know you cant see the speedometer, but it is obvious this guy is speeding. look at all the scenery going by fast. its common sense. but do what you got to do, if thats how you guys do things thats cool.
