not sure. But what I think is, that a german woman called Nena sung this song, and he couldnt translate the part so he sang her words. Or it may bbe, he kept it german to show respect to Nena. But overall, im not really sure.

Thanks mate. Yeah, kinda about the war with the germans. The balloons are like bombs, bomber planes, etc. Its describing a war with the Germans though, definatley. Thanks for viewing and commenting!

More like the Cold War. U.S. v. Russia a.ka. the USSR. The fear at that time, anyone was ready to flip the nuke switch and BOOM nuclear war, and in the song, the ballons are actually mistaken as Russian missles, and that war commences. As he stands in the city (demoslished by war) he's thinking of a friend or family member he lost, and let's a balloon fly as a sign of what was.
