Being a TD, I couldn't resist to give this little challenge a try ;) It's fairly easy to setup and animate with, so, here's my version of the Rubik's cube setup in Max for animation purposes. It uses several scripted custom attributes, a custom function for object manipulation and a few Link() controllers to drive the little cubes. It could be simplified even more (for the animator) I guess, but it works so, here it is (just a demo for now) :) Here's the promised videotutorial:

  • One of the rings is broken. The one called rCube_shp_SBox_MASTER, which is supposed to rotate the front face doesn't seem to work.

  • Really? How come, seems to be working here.

  • Here's what I did. I deleted all the animation/keyframes. Deleted all the links. And reanimated rotation for each spin_controller circle. For some reason rCube_shp_SBox_MASTER doesn't seem to work properly. It does affect it's associated box (SBox) but not the cubes themselves. Make sense?

  • There might be an issue in the CAs or the actual assignment function, not sure. I'll take a look at it when I have some spare time.

  • Anything I can do to fix the problem myself? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated here, since I'm working on a project with a hard deadline, and your solution has been incredibly helpful except for this little bug.

    Thanks

  • Well, I'd say, if the rig worked for most of the control objects, this will most likely be a typo or some minor error. I'd say, look into the CA def on the buggy controller and compare it to the CA def on one of the working ones. If that's not the case, try looking into the function definition for a possible bug there. Other than that, if the rig works but this one object, don't worry about it and go for your solution based on the "workgin" parts of my rig, you should be fine ;)
