The traditional Irish tune is now known as "Slane".
"Be Thou my vision" is an approximate translation of the original Gaelic words.

@davidfrom1951 The tune is known as "Slane"

This hymn is NOT also known as Be Thou My Vision. That is a different hymn altogether. This tune uses the same traditional Irish folk tune, but with anacruses (lead-ins) at the beginning of lines 2, 3 and 4, which I think makes it even more beautiful than without.

@foucle music is a tool that can be used to inspire both love and hate. It is powerful and long ago they knew this better than we do today. Listening to Justin Bieber makes me want to break every commandment.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful music!
Be Blessed !!

..and to think that a long, long time ago, there was quite a debate about the use of music in religious services.
Where would religion be without these deeply touching sounds? Life is a dance. The music is therefore vital.

@foucle: I agree. It would be a bleak world without music in worship. Thanks for commenting.

This is one of the most beautiful hymns. I stood at the graveside of our child and sang this with my dear husband, children and friends 6 years ago. It is a hymn of trust and hope....it makes me proud of my Irish heritage and Catholic faith. May we always keep hope in our hearts.....
