"Yaaka Hula Hickey Dula," FOX TROT, by the Victor Military Band, is played on a Victor XIV, purchased in 1916 for $150. This Victrola is in the Music Room of the 1877-1897 HENDEL HOUSE at 746 Centre Ave., Reading, PA, one of three buildings owned by the Historical Society of Berks County, founded in 1869.

The Society's main headquarters, 940 Centre Ave., has a like-new 1926 Victor Orthophonic Credenza. For more music videos and views of the mansion, type HENDEL HOUSE in the SEARCH box. For a slide show, type Hendel House on Google. This place has one of the few mahogony front-porch decks anywhere around.

Charles Hendel, who enlarged and
Victorianized the house, was a well-known hat-maker in Reading. His granddaughter,
Marjorie Hendel-Perfect bought the house at public sale in 2000 and donated it to the
Historical Society of Berks County.

  • The 3-story home remained in the family until the late 1940's when it was sold to a small German Lutheran congregation. They had it 50 years and then gave up. It came to us in 2000. We use it for special events, so it's something of a museum, as the furniture indicates. We use the basement and part of the 2nd and 3rd floors for artifact storage.

  • My grandmother had this very 78. Did you record the other side?

  • Applause. Thanks for the memory - my Dad used to sing this to me. Your home is delightful.

  • Gmmix, Very nice presentation. What a lovely home that must have been. Is it a museum now? Thank you for sharing it. Regards, J.
