  • One can see Derek Bell was pushing hard to join up with the P1 & P2 cars. This was the beginning of a transition period. The legendary 962's, especially with Bell at the wheel, had been the class of the field. D. Bell & the other top 962 drivers weren't used to driving at their & the 962's limits to simply stay in the chase

    The Nissan & later Toyota would go on to dominate but they ruined this fantastic IMSA unlimited prototype series with the unmatchable finances of their factory teams

  • In earlier years, the Porsche 962, the fender skirted Jaguars & others had created some beautiful unlimited prototype racing with the factories simply providing the cars & the private teams, comprised of experienced, great motorsport insiders at the top, were keeping it competitive with their sponsorship & private financing

    However, the sparks were flying, the exhausts were breathing flames on the downshifts & all the excitement drew in the deep factory pockets that would be IMSA's demise : (
