The HDSP-0962 is an intelligent LED display with onboard hexadecimal decoder, 8-4-2-1 BCD inputs, display blanking and onboard memory. The HDSP-0962 has a false bitmapped display, which gives the appearance of a true bitmapped character, but only includes the pixel elements required to make up the display's limited hexadecimal character set. Unlike true bitmapped character displays, which typically have a 5x7 matrix, the HDSP-0962 has a 4x7 matrix, with the elements spaced further apart horizontally than vertically.

The HDSP-0962 is a close relative of the more common 5082-7340 LED smart display, but instead of having a standard plastic carrier, the HDSP-0962 is ruggedized, with a glass-on-ceramic carrier. The HDSP-0962 is a green die variant; other members of this family are built with red or yellow dies of various chemistries, a design versatility not permitted with the older red epoxy construction of the -73xx series.

  • so all you had to do was plug the hex signal into the light and it would display that value? thats pretty cool. saves time and money from building your own damn decoders. they shouldve made those years ago

  • They actually did make these displays many years ago, this particular series of displays has been around for about 30 years. The earliest and most common types are packaged in translucent red epoxy instead of ceramic and glass, but they are electrically identical. The display shown in the video has a 1985 date code.
