  • Both Lyle and Gillan's versions are superficial showbiz glitz compared to the raw, heart rending insight into slavery at its cruelist by Lonnie Donegan, circa 1957

  • Just heard Lyle & his Large Band perform this last night and it was thrilling. Thanks for posting.

  • i think youve got to look at both versions in diffrent ways, gillans was a powerful rock version ,lovettsa country version, with a touch of soul, whatever version you choose,to me they both sound good, sorry great,i like both ,at the end of the day its a great song, no matter what version you like

  • Ian Gillan's version of this song is just the best. Gillan (Deep Purple's vocalist) sings this song LIKE NO OTHER!!!

  • Great "chain-gang" prison work song!

Frankly, however, version by Ian Gillan "Naked Thunder" album is far more powerful and emotionally charged, mixing sound and sense with the music like the true poetic musical genius typical of Gillan's work.

The beat of the song, like the swinging machete blade, chopping at the sugarcane.

  • i was THERE at this show---- and it was amazing!!!!!
