PLEASE READ: This is for home use only. I do not recommend travel use or any rough treatment, as the pans are not terribly secure. If you make this palette, you alone are responsible for its care and handling--just like I am with mine. :) Just wanted to be in full disclosure about that risk.

That aside, this is a great alternative to expensive palettes especially if you live in an area without a nearby MAC store (counters don't carry them) and don't want to pay shipping.

Supplies used w/ approx. cost:
Gift Card Tin (Michael's craft store, $1)
Magnetic Sheet ($3 for two sheets, adhesive on 1 side)
Small round magnet (12 for $2)
Hot Glue Gun (owned previously--get them at Wal-mart for ~$5, glue sticks are about $3 for 20/30 sticks).
Scrap Ribbon (or ~$1.50 for a new round of ribbon)

Total per palette:
$1.00 for tin
$1.50 for magnetic sheet
$2.00 for 12 magnets
Negligible amount for glue & scrap ribbon

$4.50 !!!

If you have any questions or comments, leave them below. I've been using my palette for home use for over a month with no problems. :)

PS - I'm a little slap happy in this video--sorry, haha! Also, sorry for the lighting/sound issues from filming in my bathroom--it was the best lit place in the apartment. :)

  • i make my own palettes too, you can use the magnet sheeting, and most makeup brand pans will stick to the magnet without needing the little magnet dots on each one

i found using the magnet sheet and the dots made some of the shadows not want to stick to the magnet in certain positions so they would shift. so that would make this palette even cheaper without needing magnet dots

  • @snugsmontreal Great idea! I just used dots because of how deep the container is, but I think it's a great way to simplify the DIY palette. Thanks for watching and commenting! :)

  • THX SP MUCH

  • @stormchick17 Great idea! I had the hardest time finding any reasonable sized and shaped tins in my area. (Alto tins were around years ago, but I haven't seen them here recently.) This might something I look into! Thanks for the tip and for watching! :)

  • Thank you :)
