@Operaddict Thank you for writing that. What most opera queens also forget (or never knew) is that this aria is neither the only, nor is it the most difficult thing that Elvira sings in this opera. The trio that follows, the big concertati in acts 2 and 3 and of course the entire final scene are written for a dramaic soprano. The voice that sings this ROLE is not always the same one that is often impressive on the studio Aria Albums made by "star" Soubrettes. This woman is terrific!

E' una brava canante ma non ha molta sensibilità nel legato e il registro basso lascia a desiderare.

I agree with you. Actually the facepulling makes it less efficient. I am singing this aria now and am no light lyric soprano either. I am a dramatic/dramatic coloratura soprano. When pulling the face backwards like that the tongue usually pulls back and actually covers the sound and makes it even heavier to stay in pitch, though I can't say I hear that problem with this singer, but she feels a bit muffled and strained to my ears at times. It's a very hard aria though, as you know.

I absolutely agree with you!!

Super! Good for her!

May be this is Sylvie's way to be as effcicient as possible, and let me say you something, I have had the happiness of sharing stage with Sylvie's and she sounds terrific beyond her facepulling!!

Yes, I actually have sung this aria, and I personally find it easier to not move around my mouth so much. It can distort the 'Ansatz', the place where the resonance is supposed to always function, which is what makes the voice carry. I am also no high light soprano, but a spinto one, which is what this repertoire needs. Just because(!) this repertoire is already difficult enough, one should find every possible way to be as efficient as possible, simply for survival ;-)....so, yes, I know! ;-)

Have you ever tried to sing this aria?? Have you any idea of how hard it is? She is not a high light soprano and this is Verdi.
-
yes....I mean literally....she pulls her face all over the place, choreographing the entire aria...just wondering if she is doing herself a favour doing that....and seriously wondering whether she needs to do that!
Tragically, most people only know opera singing from recordings. THEY DO NOT DO A SINGER JUSTICE. ONLY in the theatre can you truly discern whether or not a singer has a voice. This wonderful soprano fills the house with voluptuous beautiful sound, acts convincingly, and is beautiful to look at.
There is a GOOD REASON why the world's opera houses engage her...and this is because she can really deliver the goods!

Bravissima Sylvie Valayre!
