he didnt hate the turf, at this time the turf was too competitive. bill mott was a genius for putting him on a noncompetitive dirt.

You can see Cigar clearly hated running on turf. The one i noticed in just about all his races on turf, he would be in contention around the turn as if he is going to go by them and just back pedal. Still turned out to be a great champion years later.
