Whimsical and sometimes realistic animations such as this one were commonly reproduced mechanically in the Black Forest sence teh early Nineteenth Century. Here, a woman beats her stitching husband over the head with a rolling pin. One strike for each hour. The tailor moves his sewing with the motion of the pendulum.

The scene recalls the Grimm Brothers' story about the tailor who, with one blow killed seven flies that were gathering around his fresh jam. He was so proud he made a belt and stitched on the lettering "Seven With One Blow." As he strutted about town with this belt, rumor began to circulate that he had killed seven MEN with one blow.

When the King heard of this he called upon the tailor to solve some problems for him (giants, a dragon, etc.) and in return the taylor's reward (of course) was to be the Princess's hand in marriage.

The taylor had several adventures after that, and even managed to outwit every creature that came accross his bath - using brain instead of brawn to achieve his goal. When he returned to the king he settled down with his new wife the Princess and started up his taylor business again.

Imagine the Princess's displeasure when she found that she hadn't married a dashing and courageous prince at all. She was stuck with this lowly Taylor!

  • Are there any other cuckoo clocks available based on the Grimm Fairy Tales, such as Red Riding Hood, Rumpelstilkskin, Hansel and Gretel, etc?

  • @Nelexin There are many. Check out the Fox and Grapes from Aesop. Check out our website.

  • how old is that coo clock

  • @ubernoobly It's brand new! These fine works of art are still being crafted, BY HAND, by Black Forest artisans - the same as they were hundreds of years ago. Please take a moment to visit our website!

  • My wife usually hits me with a 12" cast iron skillet. Is it possible to replace the rolling pin with that item?

  • Yes it is! Custom cuckoo clocks are available. Contact us for more information.

  • It's unfortunate that the obvious abuse of a man by a woman in this cuckoo clock is considered acceptable.

  • I see a little house to the right of the unhappy couple. Is this the doghouse that the husband is going to be put into when the wife is done smacking him? :P

  • I find the automation quite interesting. You might be aware that mechanical organs were made in the Black Forest region in Germany. Some of them wound up on carousels in Coney Island during the early 20th century. One that comes to mind is the 65 key Gebruder Bruder "Elite Orchestra Apollo" organ converted to play B.A.B. 66 key paper rolls that was on the B&B Carousell in Coney Island for many years. Both the organ and the carousel are now being restored.

  • I love all of your clocks - I had no idea that there was such a rich history of themes and animated characters! Thank you for including so much information about your beautiful inventory!

  • :O I love it! :D

  • hehehe very talented
