I agree with you that he would have had more homerun due to the larger field dimensions. The rest of the stuff though pretty much evens out. The pitchers he faced had just as little an access to videotape, fitness equipment, and traveling luxuries. Had he played in today's game. He would have access to all the new technology, but so do all the pitchers that he faces. I think some things like weight lifting actually hurt the players ability to hit. Could be why there are few good hitters now.

Back in his day, hitting the foul pole was a ground rule double and not a homerun. I read a book explaining how Babe Ruth would have hit 104 homerunes in a single season if the rules had been the same as they are today. It kind of escapes me though.

You're arguing against yourself on alot of points - First off, Ruth had to travel by train just like the other players. Had he have the ability to travel like todays players, and for that matter have access to the high tech fitness equipment we have today, his natural talent would probably have only compounded that. Also, he lost a ton of rules on the "last seen rule" There were also other rules that impeded his totals as well. Not to mention today's bat and ball as well as stadium design

Not at all - the point was, and is, Ruth would not dominate the game today as he did back then. Travelling by train is much easier than by plane, and if you've ever had jet lag you would know that.
Hi natiural talent was awesome for his time, but not by today's standards. He wouldn;t be hitting 16-triples/season like he did in '21 - he didn;t have speed for that, and the defence is too good.
Are you saying Cobb would have averaged close to .400 for 10-years if he used equipment of today?

This is quite possibly top 10 most ignorant responses I've ever received. Travelling by train is much easier than by plane??? Then why don't people do it? Because it's even longer! Jet lag is a term placed on a condition caused by travelling long ways/across time zones. Just because it's called "jet lag" doesn't make it synonymous with planes - ROFL!!!!!!!!!!

And as stated above natural talent is natural talent, we haven't evolved or anything. On the flip side of that, they probably wouldn't just because they'd be making millions and Ruth probably would have been dead at 25. Players just don't play as hard anymore. If players today had that drive, any ONE of them could probably do it. But your jet lag comment took the cake and gave me a good laugh so at least something came of our friendly debate :)

You must be some sort of numbskull, or just plain rude. Players don't play as hard anymore? Did that come out of your own observations, or are you citing some kind of evidence?
People haven't evolved? What's the average height today? People are always evolving, it doesn;t stop when we walk upright. If you have children, (which is a chilling thought), are they and thier peers not bigger and stronger than you were? Not developing more quickly?

By the same token, are you saying pitchers would have started 45/55-games today, becuase of equipment and training?
Pitchign today is better becuase ptichers are better, because pitching itself is more complete and varied, spitball aside. Unless you're cheating, dominating homeruns as he did for the 20's is impossible today.
Doesn't take away from him being the most dominant player ever, just wouldn;t be the same today.

Pitchers don't start 45/55 games anymore because it's not the way the games played anymore. If a pitcher were to do so they could adapt to it just like the old schoolers did. pitching today is better because pitchers are bettter? Did we evolve as humans based on a sport? No. We're still built the same, we just play the game differently now (including those changes that I mentioned previously). And don't' get me into cheating. Players took amphetamines and cheating is completely subjective

That's the point - there was no specialized pitching in that day, relivers were the pitchers who couldn't start - the talent pool was obviously less.
If you think the travel of today is easier, read Aaron's book, or try to have a bit more of an open mind.
Cheating isn't subjective - that's why it's called cheating.
