Kettlebells are an effective training tool, but not everyone can afford them. Here is one of many alternatives to get a similar loading pattern with a piece of common gym equipment - the dumbbell. Dumbbell swings do tax the grip more, chalk is recommended, since you have an open hand (not wrapped around a handle like a kettlebell).

However, the momentum from the hamstring and glute muscles during the swing should not overload the shoulder and hand to a point where the swing can not be completed.

Dumbbell swings will help you get a strong core, hands, and posterior chain.

  • Dude, thanks for this..

  • Thank you for this! I'm going to go by a Tundra now.

  • This show that with a little ingenuity you could get things done with minimal equipment...

    Good video...

  • instead of using DB or kettlebells, i use weights i have that have triangular holes in them, and its almost like a kettlebell, except i got em on craigslist dirt cheap.

  • about two years ago i was doing this and dropped the dumbell then instinctively tried to catch it and it smashed my finger to shit ... just be carefull and dont be an idiot like i was LOL

  • very similar to how okinawa and gojuryu karate men do it

    great stuff

  • I like how you swung to the side too, instead of just straight.

In the interest of safety, i'd probably hold the handle instead. Or use a dumbbell with a thinner end to grab.

  • nice upload, im gona add some of this to my workout.
