Picture Story-telling for Kalash children by Tajima Shinji, Japanese writer
My first educational activities would be the Kalash, a non-Islamic minority ethnic group of some 4000 people living near the border with Afghanistan.
One day one of the workshop in the village of Lumbul, I demonstrated to show the picture story-telling called Kamishibai from Japan. This is the story of Panda adventure written by me. All of the children and teacher in the primary school were so much enjoyed.
After that I demonstrated how to make paper from the bark of the willow tree that grows in the river valleys of the region. At first, only curious children gathered to watch. Their gaze was intently fixed on my every movement ? what could this be?! After some time,
Kalasha youth came, then adult women, and finally even the elders involved themselves in papermaking. This paper that they held in their hands was not something transported from the city, but paper that by their own efforts they had made. I could never forget those faces filled with a confident joy.
No sooner had the pulp spread over the screen frames dried into paper than the young people peeled it off an began to paint upon it whatever they pleased. They made line paintings of various animals, people and everyday scenes. Interestingly, all the animals they portrayed in the act of defecating ? as proof of their being alive? Here in this pre-literate village, a fire was kindled in the hearts of the Kalasha people who had long waited for such a medium for their expression. This was the kind of situation I had envisioned for non-formal community education to open the door to literacy.
The workshop with the Kalasha people continued, punctuated by shouts of surprise and joy as the participants expressed and recorded their own culture on their homemade paper. Wada Akiko, a Japanese woman who had married into a Kalasha family in the village, enthusiastically joined in as an instructor for the young people, and the workshops were a platform for lively interaction and self-expression. The children and young women were especially enthralled. Upon the newly made paper they painted with ink made from walnuts. Picture books and postcards produced then became a new source of income to contribute to improvements in village life. This all began with the papermaking workshop.
