Affair on EighthAvenue
words and music: Gordon Lightfoot
artist: Gordon Lightfoot
So I have had the Lightfoot channel on pandora and this song popped up that I vaguely remember but never really listened to. This one seems haunting to me. I wonder if there are any details to the songs backround. I love the feeling and the moment and the picture it paints. Never realized what a writer he is.
PS He uses lots of reverb and I dont like to overdo that but it sounds funny otherwise. Also I am not trying to copy him but I do identify with the feeling of the song which is why i like this song.
There could be an instrumental but i would have to practice that part and thats no fun. This just came out all by itself so it is what it is.
Em D Am Bm C D
The perfume that she wore was from some little store on the down side of
town.
Em D Am Bm C D
But it lingered on long after she?d gone, I remember it well. G D C D
And our fingers entwined like ribbons of light,
G Em Am F D
And we came through a doorway somewhere in the night.
Em D Am Bm C D
Her long flowing hair came softly undone in a pile all around.
Em D Am Bm C
And she brushed it down as I stood by her side in the warmth of
D
her love. G D C D
And she showed me her treasures of paper a nd tin ,
G Em Am F D
And we played a game only she could win. G D C D
And she told me a riddle I?ll never forget
G Em Am F D
And left with the answer I?ve never found yet.
Em D Am Bm C D
?How long,? said she, ?Can a moment like this belong to someone??
Em D Am Bm C
What?s wrong, what is right? For to live or to die,? ?We all D
must be born.? G D C D
So, if you should ask me what secrets I hide, G Em Am F D
I?m only your lover, don?t make me decide!

You're getting so many hits on some of your songs. Is the temptation beginning to work on you to do more? Have you thought of showing your face in the videos. One can only play in the closet so long. Come out! Come out! It's time to come out and be recognized. The John Barleycorn song would have sounded so nice with inclusion of a bass.

Very enjoyable. One of Gord's best songs.

I've noticed you rarely go past the first three frets. I'm rarely going below the fifth. It seems singing requires a more bass support than those who are just musically presenting the songs. Sometimes I do put the capo on the fourth or fifth fret but that's unusual and would mostly be with English ballads. Thoughts?

@MrFritz136 I tune the whole guitar 2 half steps lower. I put capo wherever the lowest note in the song matches my lowest vocal range. That gives me the most headroom.Must be why never thought of it. Does that make sense?
ps do u mean capo position or left hand position. If the latter it must be cuz i do the simplest.
