Kanagawa Institute of Technology designed the "Power Assist Suit" to cut labor burdens for caregivers.

Providing personal care is extremely labor intensive, and caregivers frequently suffer back injuries.

Power Assist Suit was developed in an attempt to resolve this issue, and caregivers who wear the suit can have the energy needed to carry out their duties.

Designed with idea of assisting people, this robot-like device sports an array of innovative, user-friendly features.

The mechanical component of the Power Assist Suit is placed on the caregivers back so as not to interfere with the personal contact between the caregiver and the patient.

Power Assist Suit is worn directly by the caregiver, and its master-slave design places the caregiver as the master and the robotic suit as the slave thereby ensuring safety.

This new device provides superior mobility and assistance through the use of miniature air pumps and muscle stiffness sensors. The newly developed muscle stiffness sensors attach to the skin and act to calculate joint torque, and this data in turn is used to determine the proper assist force.

The Power Assist Suit represents the success of ongoing revolutionary research aimed at interweaving man and machine as it knits together the human desire to provide care with a stable source of mechanical energy.
