sure it makes sense in English. people use "them" to indicate a singular person all the time! e.g. when they're (see i just did it) trying to keep the person to which they are referring anonymous, when they don't know the gender of the individual, etc.
(they should teach linguistics in school instead of imposing unnatural "grammar rules")

Florida and Michigan knew the ramifications when they voted early, they should blame the people who decided to vote early. If YOU want a CONTINUED economy in the toilet, failed foreign policies, fighting a never ending war, gas prices continuing to skyrocket. Bush will still be millionaire with lifetime healthcare and not a care in the world.
