DIY: Volkswagen Key Fob Dissembly

How to disassemble a VW MKIV keyless entry remote/key fob to replace the battery, clean, replace the buttons or case, or customize. The battery type if 2032. The first 3/4 of the video contains how to pull apart the remote and the last 1/4 of the video contains detailed images of the different parts of the remote's case and internals. This particular remote is from a 2004 Volkswagen Golf MK4, but the same or similar remotes can be found on the Jetta, Bora, Passat, R32, Beetle, Phaeton, Eos and Audi models such as A3, A4, A6, A8, etc.

Hi there - the demobiliser chip. Is this something I can easily transfer to a new casing or are there special instructions I need to follow?

(BTW - very useful video. I will be referring to this again when it comes time to changing remote covers!)

It's just a small chip that slides into a slot in the plastic casing. I believe you can just pop it out and transfer it to the new casing.

i have a question, what if my key get wet and since then didnt work anymore, can i still try to do this or do i need to buy another new brand key, btw i've heard that those keys cost 200 bucks i have seen them in ebay for 25 bucks, what can i do?

i'll really appreciate if someone can answer this

@tigre909 Sorry for the late reply... You might be able to pull it apart and dry the components out in the inside. Some of the electronic might have also shorted out in the inside, so it'll be too hard to repair. I would think you should be able to purchase one of those ebay fobs, swap your key over, and reprogram it according to your car. Although I'm not 100% sure if this would work with reprogramming the new fob though.

Is there a way to change only the silicon part? (that controls the buttons of opening and closing).That's because in my key these buttons are very damaged. Thanks

@brightbr I believe you can buy just the buttons on Ebay. You would have to remove the circuit board itself by cutting away the little plastic nubs in the corner holes on the circuit it. After you would have to glue the circuit board back in.

@dntcd The spring should clip in the button mark of the key. There is a tab which sticks past the outside diameter of the spring(shown at the pics in the end of the video), that part goes into the plastic casing.
