I wrote these pieces to give students working through Western music exam syllabi an opportunity to experience and explore through sounds and shadows the colours of a different culture, of sounds more insular, flavoured with palm oil, of shadow puppets and mountain chains and the many exotic mysteries of the islands of the Malay Archipelago.
In the second piece, batik Nights, as much as possible I tried to conjure up the sounds of the gamelan orchestra, the jingle-jangle of marimbas and xylophones.

Voyage, sail, flight.....all movement.
Buoyancy is the key element in creativity - yes? To keep things afloat.....
I remember Robert Dessaix once writing me he was "off to seek buoyancy". That has lived with me ever since. I so love that.

".. palm oil, shadow puppets and mountain chains ..."
the words "voyage," "sail" come to my mind and "flight"

You are such a romantic Phillip. That of course is why you can do what you do so very well. Once again I just closed my eyes and let it all fill me up. Beautiful.
Love

These postcards from a distant land carrying aural scents and colors delight me. Though I am currently more an armchair traveler, it takes but a melody to fill my mind with thoughts and dreams of places I long to see. Beautiful!
