As the U.S. economy remains on a consistent downward spiral, one thing the U.S. Government is never shy to invest endless cash in is the Pentagon. Which - on its end -- is pumping millions of dollars into luring in the young population of America into enrolling into the military. RT's Anastasia Churkina looks at some of those mesmerizing techniques, and what kind of effect they have had on those fit to serve.

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one
international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the
losses in lives.

A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small "inside" group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes."
- Major General Smedley Butler ("War Is A Racket")

"I spent 33 years in active military service as a member of the Marine Corps. I served from 2nd Lt. to Major-General. And during that period, I spent most of my time being a high class muscle-man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the Bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism... Looking back, I might have given Al Capone a few hints...."
- Major General Smedley Butler ("War Is A Racket")

  • Ya just entertainment attracts to the military. Not the fair pay, early retirement, free health insurance, free education, federal hiring benefits, coverage for disabilities suffered, and 400K life insurance (just off the top of my head). Being in the military is sweet and you actually have a bigger chance of dieing in a car accident in the states then being killed in combat while serving. Stupid hippies and Ruskies.

  • @localhero101 First of all, I was born and lived in a country that was bombed by the US (and lived there during the intervention), so you are argument doesnt work (its Serbia). Almost nobody thought it was a good thing for us (of course) but status quo was a lot worse. We had an idiot of a president who did stupid things and screwed up the future of the next few generation generations. He needed to be forced into behaving and thats what the US did. Also, made him fall down easier after that.

  • @jashta1 You are truly clueless. In fact, having any kind of military presence ANYWHERE, makes each & every one of us less safe. Have you ever put yourself in the shoes of the people of the countries we occupy? Wouldn't you fight back? I sure as hell would. I'd try to kill every god damned American I could stab, shoot or blow up until I'd driven them out or they were all dead. If you'd bother to read the intelligence estimates produced by the CIA, they say the exact same thing.

  • @jashta1 a society, just out of the blue sky?? Its possible, yet less believable. In fact, the less US soldiers are present, the more violence will brake out. More soldiers and more people with more time and money invested in rebuilding Iraq, the better it is for the Iraqi people, wether they believe (or any of you people who dont have the responsibility for such life altering events). It is not the question of morals, its the question of cause and effect.

  • @jashta1 , mostly islamic jihadists and tribalistic leaders aspiring to absolute power, more impotent in their operations and, therefore, are further from their goal and less people die in the process. Not everyone is a person believing in freedom and rights of an individual. In fact they are the most agressive ones. If we dont have a large military presence of the powers that are the nearest in achieving such states of society, do you people really believe that the others will strive for such..

  • @Tressco Yes, it is an extortion, and yes it is, by definition, a coercive tool for making people DO what you think should be done. And sometimes this is a good thing for the people in large (future generations more then the ones that fight it) rather then just good for the few people who know what its all on about. If America has military presence in the middle east it is a good thing for the people in the middle east, simply because their presence makes all of the strategic enemies...

  • @Tressco another quote from General Smedley Butler is "I spent most of my time being a high class muscle-man for Big Business, for Wall Street and for the Bankers. In short I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism." From the same book. This man was awarded with TWO Medals of Honor.

  • @DaMarlboroMan3 almost like welfare, living off the government some just stick around to retire. We get paid a lot for not having a college degree, for officers its diff. bc people go to college for a career.
